Dua Lipa can't stop worrying about the future on "Break My Heart."

  • Lipa told Zane Lowe: "It's a perfect explaination of 'dance crying.'"

  • "It's about finally being in a happy place and knowing this new person is amazing."

  • "But then thinking: 'Nothing else compares to this , and what is this ends and it breaks my heart?'"

  • "It's the whole thing of being scared to be too happy, like when your day is going really well and you think, 'What's the one thing that's going to fuck it up?'"

  • "Break My Heart" comes off Dua Lipa's 2020 sophomore album, 'Future Nostalgia.'

  • The LP arrives three years after Lipa made her 2017 self-titled debut, which spawned the global hit "New Rules."

  • Lipa told NPR that she purposefully stepped away from the public eye after releasing her uber-successful debut.

  • Lipa: "In all honestly, never in a million years did I think my first album was going to do what it did."

  • "And as things got bigger, there started to be quite a lot of opinions from other people online. Criticism started coming in thick and fast, just for the sake of it."
  • "Once I was coming to the end of the album cycle, I wanted to make sure that I wasn't focusing my energy on anything negative."

  • "I just didn't want to get caught up in what the first record did. I wanted to grow and mature as an artist."

  • "I wanted to take everything that I learned from the first album cycle and campaign and work towards getting better."

Lipa says all of 'Future Nostalgia' was heavily inspired by music of the '70s and '80s.

  • "Break My Heart," which was produced by The Monsters & Strangerz and watt.

  • The producers sampled the beat from INXS' 1987 hit, "Need You Tonight."

  • As a result, INXS members Michael Hutchence and Andrew Farriss share writing credit with Lipa and songwriter Ali Tamposi.

  • Lipa told Junkee: "A lot of the album came from artists like Jamiroquai and Moloko and Prince and Blondie."

  • "Those are artists that my partners really loved, so I see them as my childhood influences."

  • "I wanted to touch on them but then bring in a future element to it--something that's modern and me, and feels current,"

'Future Nostalgia' arrived in March 2020, on the heels of the pandemic spread of COVID-19 coronavirus.

  • Lipa considered pushing back her release date, but ultimately decided against it.

  • She told NPR: "Over the past couple of weeks while we've been in self-isolation, there have been a lots of emotions."

  •  "And I think I'd lying if I said that the current situation doesn't make me well up at least five to 10 times a day just because of the uncertainity of it."

  • "It's all a bit unsettling."

  • "I was thinking to maybe move the album to later but at the same time, I felt like maybe I was doing a disservice to my fans and listeners."

  • "I made this album to get away from the anxiety and pressures of making a second record and to get away from other people's opinions."

  • "I just wanted to make an ablum that was fun and something that I could dance to and something that made me feel good."

  • "So I felt like maybe now more that ever, that album should just come out."
